Bunda Jewellery Care Guide

Designed to last for generations, each Bunda piece is individually handcrafted using only the highest quality materials and made to the strictest specifications. We feel everything we create is a treasured talisman. For heirloom to be worn across generations, however, jewellery must be properly cared for.

General Jewellery Care

Fine jewels love to be cushioned and coated in soft surroundings, so do treasure your Bunda jewellery in the softly lined boxes or pouches that we provide. The fact that beautiful jewels (especially rings and earrings) become a second skin, gives rise to the fact one can forget they are still wearing their diamonds in the garden, at the kitchen sink or near an abrasive surface.

To protect your pieces apply some mindful glamour rules, IE: Try not to play tennis too regularly in a diamond tennis bracelet or skim your aquamarine cocktail ring over the edge of a yacht. Pearls in the bath may be worn occasionally but only above the bubbles!

Because rings live and move with you, Jewels mounted in claw settings should be regularly checked to ensure the gems are secure. We recommend professional care of your jewellery at least once every 3 to 5 years, depending on the frequency of wear. We offer services for your Bunda jewellery with services such as inspecting claw settings, repolishing and re-plating precious metals and re-stringing pearls.

Nurture your collection and wear your gems at their best. The finest gold chain to the most substantial bracelet deserves the same level of care.

Pearls

Pearls are the only gemstone created by a living creature. Their unique organic characteristics require gentle protection.

Caring for Pearls

Wipe your pearls with a soft clean cloth after each wear. Avoid contact with perfume, cosmetics, hair products and household chemicals.

Always store pearls separately from other gems to avoid the risk of scratches.

Bunda pearl necklaces can be brought back into Bunda for re-stringing.

Diamonds

Diamonds are formed by the compression of carbon over millions of years and are on one of the hardest substances known to man. They are tough, but tender, and deserve delicate attention to preserve their brilliance for eternity.

Caring for Diamonds

Diamonds can be cleaned with one part ammonia and eight parts water. A general jewellery cleaning solution or warm soapy water is also suitable. The diamonds should then be rinsed with warm water and scrubbed gently with a soft bristle toothbrush to remove all traces of solution and debris. This should not be used for other gemstones or pearls.

Ultrasonic cleaning is also suitable for diamonds. Pop into the studio and we will do it for you.

Opals and Coloured Stones

Opals and coloured stones appear in a myriad of colours. Often as precious as diamonds, but not as hard, they need to be treated with special care and respect.

Caring for Opals and Coloured Stones

Care should be taken when handling opals and coloured stones, as contact with a hard surface may cause them to crack.

These gemstones can be porous and absorb chemicals or even soap which may build up inside the stone and discolour it. Please avoid contact with perfume, cosmetics, hair products and household chemicals.

Bunda opals and coloured stones should be wiped clean with a soft clean cloth and a visit to Bunda for thorough cleaning and to check that the stones are secure in their settings every 3 to 5 years.

Gold

At Bunda, we use only 18-carat or 22-carat yellow gold. Gold has excellent chemical stability that results in a high resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

Caring for Gold

Gold can be cleaned with a soft clean cloth or a gold cleaning solution.

Jewellery consisting entirely of gold can be dipped into a solution of warm water and bicarbonate of soda. It should then be wiped clean with a soft cloth. Do not use this method to clean jewellery containing gemstones.

Contact with abrasive items through everyday wear will result in scratches. The only way to remove these is to have the gold repolished.

White Gold

White gold consists of yellow gold, which is alloyed with copper, silver, nickel and zinc, then plated, in either rhodium or platinum to achieve its white colour.

Caring for White Gold

Contact with abrasive items through everyday wear will result in scratches. The only way to remove these is to have white gold repolished.

Over time, white gold will tarnish and will require re-plating to restore its white colour.

Platinum

Platinum is one of the hardest of the precious metals. It is naturally white in colour and will not tarnish with wear. It is also hypo-allergenic and will suit those with allergies to other precious metals.

Caring for Platinum

Platinum can be cleaned with a soft, non-abrasive cloth.

As with all metals, contact with abrasive items through everyday wear will result in scratches. The only way to remove these scratches is to have platinum repolished.

Silver

Sterling silver is a soft malleable metal, so please handle your silver jewellery with care and be sure not to bend earring posts.

Caring for Silver

Perspiration, dust, salt water and any chemical substance can cause silver jewellery to tarnish and lose its shine. It is advisable to wipe off dust and moisture with a damp soft cloth each time after use.

To prevent scratches and tarnishing, keep jewellery pieces separate in their original packaging and store in a well-ventilated place away from sunlight and humidity. Please use a silver cloth to wipe away any tarnish.
